Tough question.
My thought on that is that cult wants you to believe in a living individual and enrich and praise that person as if they themselves were a god or the god or son of god.
Religion believes in a higher power and man is doing the work of that deity
As for each individual on this site, that is not for me to decide or judge.
only agree or disagree with the statement they leave in this public forum.

Counterfeit Christianity is probably the best description I can give for a cult. Counterfeit Christianity is an imitation of real Christianity. Bible terms like "Jesus Christ, Resurrection, Salvation, and Atonement" are used by the Cult, but the various cult groups have assigned entirely different meanings to these terms.
Like counterfeit money which is sometimes difficult to detect, so it is difficult to detect counterfeit Christianity, since it looks like the real thing. Experts examining counterfeit money often hold it up to a strong light and look for identifying marks. Counterfeit Christianity also has identifying marks, which can be seen when, held up to an even stronger light, the light of God's word, the bible.
We are at an advantage if we know what to expect from a cult. Cultists are very well trained to appear "Christian", and indeed believe they are the true churches, and you need the deliverance! Therefore, be bold and ask the question, "do you believe the group you represent is the only true church on the face of the earth?"
If they reply that they are, or if they are evasive, making remarks like "Well, every church has a measure of truth but...", you have made an early detection of a Cultist.
Every true Christian, if asked the same question, regardless of his denomination, would reply that the true church is comprised of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and HE (not some organization) is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE, (John 14:6). No legitimate denomination would claim that they alone and their members have salvation exclusively, but the cults (the counterfeits) do.

A cult is not just a religion. The major religions of the world are not cults. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism are not cults. As a Christian, I have major differences with the other religions and I believe they have missed God's unique revelation of Himself in Jesus Christ, but they are not cults.
Some people say, "The only difference between a cult and a religion is a hundred years," but they blur a vast distinction between the two. There is a sizable body of literature on cults, so if you want to go the following website, you will see the summary of the definition of cults, using the acronym CULT: http://www.leaderu.com/common/cults.html

There is a tremendous difference between the average Christian and the average cult-member. You should look up the definition of "brainwashing." My guess is that you regurgitate the answers to math problems without bothering to understand the logical basis behind mathematics, or that you regurgitate historical facts without investigating the primary sources.
By drawing a parallel between repeating something without thinking about it in-depth and being brainwashed, you are falling under your own definition of being brainwashed. Have you read up the effectiveness of various brainwashing techniques, or are you just regurgitating a vague concept of "being told what to believe"?

Cult members are people who belong to one particular group and normally believe in satanic stuff to harm thereselves, Christians or people who read the bible and seek to get an understanding, Now most people get different understandings, in which that's why there are different religions. So when it comes down to it, I think there are way more churches and believers in God, than there are Cults.

Troll fail. You're pretending to be anti-religion, but singled out Christians. Your liberal hypocrisy is showing. Why didn't you aim this question at any or all of the other religions?

yeah, I very much agree. I have succumbed to brain washing in the past and caught up in being brainwashed. through not trusting my own ability to interpret the word of god. so therefore I believe their interpretation which they manipulate to meet there own means, and not gods. yes there are a lot of christians on this site whom dont have a balanced sound teaching. and some questions and answers are quite disturbing. we certainly all need to be better educated and behave appropriately so as to not give any more bad press. I totally, totally agree!!!

All religions are cults. In modern society we tend to think of cults as being detrimental and religions as beneficial but thats making a real judgement call from a background of conventional religion.
Better to avoid them all.
Unless of course, you worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Christianity is just a cult with a nice name. And you're pretty much on the money with your statement.
