When I start my computer, the Network Icon has a little red X on it for awhile, after its done booting completely, the X goes away leaving a blank Network Icon. The only way I can get the internet to work is to right click on the Network Icon and click Diagnose and Repair. After clicking that it pops up and says This Computer has No or Limited Activity. Then gives me 3 options..
1) Automatically get new IP Settings for the Network Adapter "Local Area Connection"
2) There might be a problem with your modem or router, reset them both and try again.
3) Reset the Network Adapter "Local Area Connection".

Its not 2 or 3. The only thing that works it clicking getting new IP settings. It takes about 10 seconds and then the internet is working. It has nothing to do hardware wise, something is just setup wrong and I cant figure it out. There was a time for some reason it WOULD connect all by itself whenever it wanted to. I do know a lot about computers and I dont think this is a stupid mistake.

I have had similar issues, generally what I found was that the DHCP server was slow in responding to the initial IP request. This is not from your computer end its from either your router or your DSL modem. If you have tried rebooting those try rebooting them and see if the problem is improved.

When automatic is pressed it sends a request to the DHCP server for an IP address which that server has to send back.

On one computer I finially just set a static address on the local machine which then does not rely on the DHCP server for an IP. The problem has not returned! So you may want to look at the IP's that get assigned once you are connected and set those into your card manually. (This really only works correctly if you have a "local" Ip address like 10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x etc) If you are getting a public IP then you may just have to continue repairing the connection. Or talk with your ISP.

I also have this problem. At first I kept having to go into the other room and unplug my router and plug it back in for the computer to find it. Now, I just wait up to 20 or 30 seconds and it will come up by itself. I think you should try that tho if you are going thru a router. Sometimes drivers get lost and the only way to retrieve them is to reset. Do that manually, not thru the software and see what happens. It took me a few times of doing that and now mine works fine. Hope this helps.
