When you're upset, what do you consciously think of to make yourself feel better? I mean specifically: describe a scenario, a memory from childhood, a fantasy and dream of the future, or an idea of a fireplace from books-- what do you conjure up in your mind to keep going and cheer yourself up?

I try to suppress any negative thoughts and instead think of all the cool things that I have done and everything I have to look forward to in life. My biggest passion is travel and exploration; I know I can always look forward to exploring a new place, be it somewhere on the other end of the globe or somewhere within driving distance. My advice to you is: discover what truly makes you happy and let that be your inspiration and motivation.

For me it depends on which kind of "upset" I am. I am not sure how to describe the two feelings but in each I seem to need totally different mind-sets.

In one, I remember a place where children and animals were abused and tortured. Where the abusers constantly and systematically tried to break someone's spirit. I remember the pain and the degradation and I remember I survived and refused to let them win. It's purely and without reservation nothing but spite but I remember and tell myself if I give up even though I'm upset, those people won. I tell myself that if I succumb to the sadness and hopelessness, even these years later, I've given them my power and let them win. I admit to being spiteful in some situations, and this is one of them. I will NOT let them win... ever.

The other is simply that I think of those I love and those who love me. I think of times I've had with them, and dream of happy times to come. I think of laying in my Sweetheart's arms, or I think of my grand-daughter's infectious laugh (she's one year old, this coming tuesday). I smile thinking about my daughter and the closeness we have. I remind myself that while I'm upset at that moment, there are and have been good and happy times, and there will be again.

Good question. I step into the here and now by paying attention to the information my senses are bringing in. I do not pay attention to this information by thinking about it, because one thought leads to another, which lead back to what I was originally thinking about, but I just live in the presence of the incoming stimuli. It takes me away from thinking about anything and I therefor get some distance from it. We can either think about the past, present, and future, or live in the now.

I belief we plan our life before we enter it. When I am at the end of my rope I tell myself that I chose this for myself as a learning experience and just give in and except what has happened or work to change it. Life is made up of experience after experience as long as we look at them as lessons rather than bad things we will be fine. I think that it is our experiences that mold us into who we are. We can't change what has already happened we can only embrace it as part of who we are.

I think of my favorite book, take out the main character (in this case Eragon from the book Eldest) and put myself in, and daydream what happens, NOT said in the story, with everything happening to me.

This is something I learned from a counselor. Often our upsettness has to do with what someone said to us. In these cases I tell this to myself:
"The words a person speaks - say a lot more about them - than they do about you"

And........What difference will this all make 100 yrs. from now?

There are people worse off than me so whatever is making me upset isn't that bad. Things will get better. That's what keeps me going. That's what I think about.

I have been abused since I was a toddler. To get through the memories, flashbacks and abuse itself, I have thought of the future, my goals and then I pick up a good book to escape.

A few other things are: the beach, sunsets, poetry, movies, books, art, etc..
I also like to see pictures of my past or think about my past or day dream and imagine myself doing wack things like with my friends,family.. first day of college, sumthin like that.

When i was upset i just do three things.
[I] I would think of my childhood dreams.
[II] I would think of my parents hope.
[III] I would imagine, what would happen if i was able to achieve my dream and start again to make it happen.
