I believe there is no question that the media affects and shapes our view of Islam. If you asked most Christians on the street in North America they would not even realize that Islam holds Jesus Christ as an important saint within their religion.
You're in a way we can really know is them ourselves is to attend a mosque. See what's going on there, read the literature that they provide and then make your own judgment.

Islam, a religion of mercy, does not permit terrorism. In the Quran, God has said:
“God does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought you about religion and have not driven you out of your homes. God loves just dealers.” (Quran 60:8)
The Prophet Muhammad, may God praise him, used to prohibit soldiers from killing women and children,[1] and he would advise them: “...Do not betray, do not be excessive, do not kill a newborn child.”[2] And he also said: “Whoever has killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance is found for a span of forty years.”[3]
Also, the Prophet Muhammad has forbidden punishment with fire.[4]
He once listed murder as the second of the major sins,[5] and he even warned that on the Day of Judgment, “The first cases to be adjudicated between people on the Day of Judgment will be those of bloodshed.[6]”[7]
Muslims are even encouraged to be kind to animals and are forbidden to hurt them. Once the Prophet Muhammad said: “A woman was punished because she imprisoned a cat until it died. On account of this, she was doomed to Hell. While she imprisoned it, she did not give the cat food or drink, nor did she free it to eat the insects of the earth.”[8]
He also said that a man gave a very thirsty dog a drink, so God forgave his sins for this action. The Prophet, may God praise him, was asked, “Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?” He said: “There is a reward for kindness to every living animal or human.”[9]
Additionally, while taking the life of an animal for food, Muslims are commanded to do so in a manner that causes the least amount of fright and suffering possible. The Prophet Muhammad said: “When you slaughter an animal, do so in the best way. One should sharpen his knife to reduce the suffering of the animal.”[10]
In light of these and other Islamic texts, the act of inciting terror in the hearts of defenseless civilians, the wholesale destruction of buildings and properties, the bombing and maiming of innocent men, women, and children are all forbidden and detestable acts according to Islam and the Muslims. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness, and the vast majority have nothing to do with the violent events some have associated with Muslims. If an individual Muslim were to commit an act of terrorism, this person would be guilty of violating the laws of Islam.

You can not judge any religion from few of it's followers.
Muslims believe that God revealed his final message to humanity through the Islamic prophet Muhammad via the angel Gabriel.[17] They consider Muhammad to have been God's final prophet, the "Seal of the Prophets", and the Qur'an to be the revelations he received in his 23 years of preaching.[18] Muslims hold that all of God's messengers since Adam preached the message of Islam — submission to the will of the one God. To Muslims, Islam is the eternal religion, described in the Qur'an as "the primordial nature upon which God created mankind".[19][20] Furthermore, the Qur'an states that the proper name Muslim was given by Abraham.[21][20]

i know about islam because i lived in the middle east for 4 years, because a family member converted to marry a guy who never showed up, went to an arabic school, did islamic studies, looked at what the quran said, and came to my own conclusions.
i do not think its fair to judge islam by what its followers do. we are talking about islam the religion, not muslims. because muslims can vary in their beliefs, i think to judge islam, we have to look at the quran.
we do do the same for other religions. im a christian, and i know we cop it all the time either because some priest raped a kid, christian representatives water down my faith, some are hypocrites, and 1 bad guy can do more damage than 1000 good guys.

I have some understanding of Islam through reading the Koran & associating with normal, everyday (i.e. not televised) Muslims.
I would never judge anyone by what sells advertising in the media & I would hate to be judged by the behaviour of fellow xians, especially the televised fundamentalists. Islam is a good religion suffering from bad press.

I know Islam means "submission," but a whole lot of Muslims want the world to think it means "peace."
I know the Koran says it is acceptable to lie to infidels in order to set them up for conquest.
I know one of the first things Mohammed did as leader of Islam was behead 900 Jewish rabbis for speaking against him.
I know if it had been Christians who perpetrated 9/11, there would have been millions in the streets saying Not in Our Name. Where were the Muslims speaking out?
I know that in the year following 9/11, according to the FBI, anti-Islamic attacks went DOWN and anti-Semitic attacks went way, way UP. Why does CAIR say the opposite is true?
I know the manifesto of HAMAS calls for "the resumption of the worldwide Holocaust." (Look it up yourself.)
I know a LOT about Islam, and the more I learn, the more I fear it.

Yes you are right. I live in a Muslim country, married to a wonderful Muslim man. So many people have inaccurate information about what Islam really is. NO religion can be judged based on a few of its followers., including Christianity. There are fanatics everywhere claiming that their actions are approved by their religion, when in actuality they are not.
