Language, like other human tools, is a culturally-affected means of communications. Just as cultures evolve separately, language undergoes the same evolution. Some countries have literally hundreds of dialects of the same basic language, yet some of those dialects are different enough to sound like a completely different tongue. For example, in the 7,100 Philippine Islands there are so many varieties of Tagalog/Filipino, the basic "mother tongue," that someone speaking bulacano may only understand a small part of someone talking in his native ilocano. Those speaking bicolano and those speaking iliano probably dont understand each other at all. Which is why the Tagalog (formerly called Filipino or Pilipino) was designated as the national language - along with English as a mandated second language.
Even in the United States, various dialects of "American English" are pronounced differently enough so as to be almost unrecognizable. Take someone from the Cajun south and put him with a Brooklyn or Queens dialect in New York and you are in for an interesting conversation. There is a southern drawl, a Texan/western drawl, distinctive Boston or Massachusetts flat accent, even a canadian-like accent in middle northern states like Minnesota/North Dakota - eh?
All these varieties are molded by cultural usage. Look at the affect that the might Roman Empire (Latin) had on the world. all the 'romance' languages are derived from Latin - Romanian, Portuguese, Spanish, French and, of course, Italian -- all alike yet very different and each developed by the culture in which it evolved.
English is indeed the most "pervasive" language used in the world but is hardly the most superior. It, in fact, is a conglomeration of many other languages from which it is derived (anglo-saxon, british, irish, gaelic, german, latin, etc.,etc.-- name a language and there probably is an English word derived from it). The influence of the English language is powered by the force of the American Dollar which controls world economies, not from anything intrinsically superior about American English itself. Regardless of the cause, American English is still the spoken medium of choice, so it is a force to be dealt with

Just count your self lucky that English even exists - it was never a language in early history as all the clans of Britain would have spoken languages similar to Galick or Welsh, then the Vikings, Anglos and Saxons came bring us their languages and the Romans brought us Latin, Italian and many world languages. What we speak today is just a mish-mash of all the languages of the world spoken at the same time.
Besides you very nearly had to speak French to use the internet as America and France were both developing the system but America got their version online quicker so English became the dominant online language.
and one last tiny point! 885 Million people speak Mandarin (16.1% of the world) while only 322 Million speak English (5.9% of the world).
So back to the original question! we speak different languages because we are from different roots, each area has it's own dialect and each country in turn has it's own language. I seriously doubt you would understand half of what people I grew up say even though they speak only English, purely and simply because people from towns not 20 miles away can't even understand it due to the accents and humor of my people.

I disagree completely. It's not waste of time to learn about other cultures and other languages. We get culturaly rich as we learn more about other languages, and other peoples. I don't know why you believe that english is superior to other languages. It's more spread, more used, it's really a very important language, but not superior. There are not such things as superior or inferior languages. I am completely fascinated by study of languages. I am now learning french, my fourth language. If I can, I would like to learn even more. At least it exercises my brain. The study of languages, it is proved, prevents Alzheimer disease.

English the most superior? don't make me laugh, it's been forced down people's throats that's true but superior..never in a month of Sundays.Just because you don't have the brain power to learn a second language, you can't even get your own right.

English is not the only language on the planet. You better ask your god why there are so many different language! If you don't want to communicate with other language speaker, you need not to ask this question.

Because people settled in different parts of the world and devolved different languages. Then other people relocated, and exchanged languages. Now Country A and Country B can easily exchange goods with one another, because they can communicate.

Because people in the olden times have invented certain languages meant to be learned in their country alone.
We speak different language because we want to, or forced to us to learn.

Bill Gates has done his bit to spread the use of English around the world, if he had been born earlier and the Internet along with him, maybe we could have dumped the other laguages earlier too, but no doubt they will disappear eventually.
