Say I had a DVI (male) to VGA (female) adapter, which is the output end and which is the input end?

a VGA output (the part on the PC) is female which makes your adapter something to connect to a VGA monitor to a DVI port I think (think <> know!)

Lets take an example for discussion. 1. You take a picture of your brother with his hot new girlfriend. The INPUT would be the CCD scanner, the DEVICE would be the camera, and the OUTPUT would be to the memory card in the camera. The TRANSACTION is the taking of the picture. 2. You connect the camera to your computer. You transfer the image. In this case the OUTPUT device would be the memory on the camera, and the INPUT device would be the disk drive on the computer. The TRANSACTION is the movement of the file. 3. You run this image file through some software to clean up the "red eye" and some other problems. In this case the INPUT device would be your hard drive, and the OUTPUT device would be your hard drive. The TRANSACTION was the software edit. 4. You decide you are going to print this file. In this case the INPUT was the the disk drive on your computer, and the OUTPUT was the printed page from your printer. The TRANSACTION was the printing of the image. In each case the DATA came from somewhere, (INPUT), and went somewhere, (OUTPUT), and there was some DEVICE associated. In each case there was something done to the DATA, ie the TRANSACTION.
