Good afternoon should be okay, it's too early for evening!

But when in doubt, use 'good day'. I run into many people who seem to think it's funny (or maybe they're obsessive-compulsive) to say 'good morning -oh, is it still morning' or 'good afternoon, oh wait, is it afternoon yet' from about 11 to 1 (technically they insist it's 12 noon) and the same from about 5 to 7pm (technically they stick to 6pm). I think this is soooooo annoying! Who cares if it's 11:59 or 12:01? But obviously many people seem to think this is a major issue, when I still used 'good morning' and 'good afternoon' I regulary had customers who tried to give me a 5-minute lecture when I was two minutes off, it's ridiculous! So several years ago I switched to using 'good day' all day long. When someone mentions it I say 'I said good day, that's always right 'cause at night we're closed'. I say so with a bit of a forced smile (I still get annoyed at people being picky about it) but it does work, no one has tried to lecture me since and I even regularly get them to say it's clever. :-)

According to english usage we always greet a person as good morning or afternoon whichever suitable when we meet a person for the first time on that particular day.But however people are always in confusion about it and even the other person does not mind being greeted anything. It is that time when you are at liberty to say anything you feel like. But i would personally prefer a good afternoon at 3:00 pm. And it is after four or later that we wish good evening.

I always say "good morning," regardless of the time. It's far simpler, and when asked, I tell people that it's a philosophy and a reminder to always make good choices. That usually shuts them up.

Seriously though, evening starts around 5pm, or up to an hour earlier if the "work day" ends before 5pm.
