Yes it can. My second child, a girl, had a very outie belly button when she was a baby, but she has an innie now. The three others all had innies at the start, and all have innies still.

When you are born the cord is cut immediately after delivery and the result is a neat little knot. As the wound heals, it takes on the vague shape of the tissue caught between abdomen and knot. The knot falls away and leaves the traditional puckered appearance of the belly button. When the umbilical cord is cut after birth, it is more likely to shrink down into an "innie" if there is a good cut and only a small section of cord. It will form an "outtie" if there is a longer section of cord left.Whether you end up an "innie" or "outie" depends on how your body heals, and the skill of whoever tied the knot.
Other than this, an "innie" can be turned into an "outtie" by pregnancy or even a hernia, which is why a larger percentage of mothers have "outties" than the population as a whole.

Has your Doctor suggested hernia surgery? An outie is a hernia and usually needs to be fixed surgically. Hernia = a small hole is in the muscle wall of the abdomen and a loop of intestine protrudes through this wall causing a lump or in this case an "outie" it is common and an easy surgery. All of my kids were born with hernias and came through it like it was nothing.... I was more of a wreck than they were. Have your Dr. check it out...Good Luck

IT depends! Some go for recorrective surgery while some tie a five cent coin with a cloth to the infant's belly button to supress it down.It is basically the inflation of air!

nope.
if u have an outty u will always have an outty.
it's a anatomically problem & it won't magically become an inny.
my umbilical cord failed 2 seal properly, so a quick operation & my innards were stopped from falling out & i have an outty.
it's what makes me unique.
