Hi. What a great question. The unfortunate answer is this: Politics. Everyone wants a piece of the pie (or just to have their fingers in it) and nothing gets done.

There's no question something needs to be done, but until we figure out who gets to go through the door first (think of the three stooges!) nothing is going to be done. :(

First, if you want a rational discussion, you need to take a deep breath and turn down the hysteria.

Global warming is not going to kill the Earth; the Earth is not alive, so it cannot be killed, any more than I can kill a rock by hitting it with a hammer.

More importantly, global warming has been going on for some time, at least 20,000 years, and life on Earth has been adapting. Of course this adaptation my be in the form of extinctions and other changes in populations, but the key here is that the adaption does happen and will continue to happen as the current warming trend continues.

This does not mean that it will be pleasent for some people or other forms of life. Change always means hardship

Who says no one is doing anything to stop it? Certain Freon refrigerants harmful to the atmosphere have been banned from spray containers and AC's for decades. Technology is being developed to reduce or eliminate burned fuels. Even nuclear reactors are being shoved to the fore to produce green energy. Introduction will take time because most people (you included?) are unwilling to pay twice as much for the latest technology before production rates drop per unit costs. What have you done? No disrespect intended. Running TV's and computers can be equated to burning known amounts of coal producing known amounts of carbon dioxide. Gasoline moves a lot of car but not a lot of people weight. Make a check list of what energy consuming devices (including manufacturing energy) you are willing to give up now, and just go do it.

Don't worry, by the time we get into dangerous levels of global warming, we'll end up causing a nuclear winter and they'll cancel each other out.

I think Al Gore summed it up nicely in "An Inconvenient Truth" when he said that the politicians will only pay attention to what their constituents are talking about. If we all write to our senators and congressmen/women and begin to complain that they do something, we'll see them take it more seriously. Otherwise, they'll just keep it on the back burner until it's too late.

I don't think that's an entirely fair statement. The media is starting to get more aware about it, going on the number of news items of late. Anyway, it's a bit hyprocritical to expect our governments and industry to do their bit when we aren't changing our own consumption practices.

A my type of question.
The obvious answer is politicians. They want to fill their tummy with money and money.
They don't care about these issues. if you will ask them about this, they will ans. sorry but no issue like this is in our concern.
So, no worries, this earth will going to suffer.
