Many people have writen many essays on such matter. Hopefully this answer thread will ultimately bring the truth.
Answer: yes for some people.
another Answer: as living organisms, our species' primary purpose is to create more humans. we have progressed to the point where our ability to do so and prevent people from dying could ultimately cause the destruction of the planet from which we derive our ability to live.
so to keep the planet alive we may eventually have to put a limit on how many humans are allowed to actually be created and grow up. Unfortunately, i have a feeling that when that happens, it will signal the end of our species because it'll mean we've forced mankind to stop growing.
or something like that.
or maybe answering yahoo questions offers enough meaning for some.

I think it's TV that does that...or maybe the internet - doh!
Honestly, though, I think "hindering the progress of our species" is a tad harsh in terms of all religions and all religious adherents.
Sure there are many religious people the societal gene pool could stand losing, but there are plenty of atheist assholes too...
And before anyone says anything, I decided not to pass my genes on long ago.

I donot think that religions give people such order without hope of doing something wothwhile, life is meaningful. The main work of person to do work and that makes fate of life. It is also true what kind of work you did,you will get that kind of result? The religions always provide good thinking to do or act in the progress of our species. To carry on work without desire provides the good results which make the meaning ful life. Also,in Hindu religion,Lord Krishna told to do your duty and left the result on Me.It is written in the history of science that religions should also be changed according to the progress of science.I donot agree with Scientists on this point.Science cannot forecast about the universal truth in this world? That is about death but our saints have forcast about universal truth that is who took birth, he/she or others would have to die prior the beinging of science. For example, Lord Budha etc misraop2004@gmail.com

Desiree who told you that Christian religions are hindering the progress of our species?
What kind of logic do you have about people in religion to have given some people hopeless to do something?
You are wrong to conclude that way.

Yes. Religion instills hope in many people and it has inspired many people to take up humanitarian works especially caring for the unfortunate, the lepers and disabled, working in most difficult situations like war torn areas of Iraq,Afghanistan,Sri Lanka and amidst Tsunami victims or earth quake.

Amazing isn't it that many see your question as an attack on their beliefs? Yes, some religions hold people back and its not all religions but some do fight against progress, I imagine its because nobody comfortable wants that to change.

i'm a Christian, and that i agree that folk stay happy and significant lives even even with the undeniable fact that they don't have self assurance in deities or faith. yet happiness or disappointment is not any reason to think of there is or isn't a god. even if if faith makes you happy or not is thoroughly irrelevant to the question of even if if any faith is genuine. the only reason each and every physique could undertake any faith is that in the event that they think of that faith is genuine. certainty only would not look to care approximately what makes us happy. If it concerns to you even if if there's a God or not, there is an endless volume of literature protecting and refuting the existence of God, and it may well be relatively ordinary which you will avail your self of this fabric. yet on condition that it concerns to you.

For many followers- YES
Think of it this way, when the only good deed you do is try to convert people to believe as you do then the only good deed you did was try to change someone to think as you and that is not good.It is selfish.
