Uric acid (or urate) is an organic compound of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen with the formula C5H4N4O3.
Consumption of purine-rich diets is one of the main causes of hyperuricemia. Other dietary causes are ingestion of high protein and fat and starvation. Excess serum accumulation of uric acid can lead to a type of arthritis known as gout.
Gout is precipitation of monosodium urate crystals into tissue, usually in and around joints, most often causing recurrent acute or chronic arthritis. Acute arthritis is initially monarticular and often involves the first metatarsophalangeal joint; symptoms include acute pain, tenderness, warmth, redness, and swelling. Diagnosis requires identification of crystals in synovial fluid. Treatment of acute attacks is with anti-inflammatory drugs. Attacks are prevented with NSAIDs and/or colchicine, and, for persistent hyperuricemia, allopurinol or uricosuric drugs.
Greater-than-normal levels of uric acid (hyperuricemia) may indicate:
* Acidosis
* Alcoholism
* Diabetes
* Gout
* Hypoparathyroidism
* Lead poisoning
* Leukemia
* Nephrolithiasis
* Polycythemia vera
* Renal failure
* Toxemia of pregnancy
* Purine-rich diet
* Severe exercise

The most likely effect is probably Gout. You can reduce your Uric Acid levels by changing your diet, reducing your consumption of certain meats and seafood. See the link below for a list of foods to avoid. The good news is that high levels of Uric Acid seem to be very protective against Multiple Sclerosis!

Uric acid is found in meats and gets to our bodies by consuming too much meat. I don't know what this number means, but I do know that when it deposits in our bones, it's not a good thing. People have difficulty walking, their limbs get swallen. The best way to wash it away is a special diet rich in veggies and fruit and absolutely no meat!

my husband takes it. It is a good choice. It can help with the uric acid level, and if you are plagued with gout, it helps keep that from flaring up. Keep with it, I do not know of any long term effects.
