No educated religion believes that taking your own life is a sin anymore but that it is a form of mental illness. This absurd crap that if you commit suicide that your going to hell has been abandoned by anyone that gives a damn about serious depression. It astounds me that some of the hack answers that have been given here. I guess it means that you don't have to be intelligent if you are religious.

Years ago, people didn't understand why suicides happened. When something is difficult to grasp, especially suicide, it's labeled as evil. There is more understanding by the public of the inner pains and horrors a suicidal person goes through, plus there are many Roman Catholics--priests and higher ups--who understand this. In the Roman Catholic church, when a person is forgiven, his/her soul goes to heaven. (This is what I was taught by my parents who were heavy duty Roman Catholic.)

Suicide is wrong because its not your life to take. Its a gift from God. Im not saying God isnt forgiving of those in the situation where suicide happens tho. He Loves all his children and doesnt like to see them in pain. As far a the hell theory It doesnt exist! Hell is just a shallow grave look it up in the dictionary. The whole hell firey torment thing is a false doctrine taught by (false religion)

Only God can chose whether you go to hell for it when that time comes if you did committ suicide. Nobody went to hell yet. Even satan is still alive in spirit. But the fact is you don't have a right to take away your life cause you didn't create it. It's killing one of God's children cause that's what we all are. A true Christian would never judge that you would definitely go to hell. God will judge us individually. We don't have that right. You will still have to answer to Him for it and then He will make that judgement. If I were you I wouldn't be taking a chance though.

It comes from the idea that our life is judged by a scorecard keeping track of our sins, and they are either 'forgiven' or 'not forgiven'. If you die with any sins in the 'not forgiven' column, you will be damned to Hell. Since the nature of suicide (you are dead) doesn't allow for a chance to 'confess and repent', you just lose.
Personally, I think this is wrong. We are either saved by Jesus' sacrifice or we aren't. God judges our heart, and He knows the difference between a sinful heart and a hurting heart.

It's wrong. It's selfish. Suicide is giving up on life, often at the expense of those who care about you. Killing yourself is stupid. It's an excuse for taking the easy escape and leaving whoever is left to carry on with your problems and the emotional problems that you have given them. Not commiting suicide when it seams like you should demonstrates the most endurence and strength.

I do not believe that a Christian who commits suicide will lose salvation and go to hell. The Bible teaches that from the moment a person truly believes in Christ, he or she is eternally secure (John 3:16). According to the Bible, Christians can know beyond any doubt that they possess eternal life no matter what happens. “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God” (1 John 5:13). Nothing can separate a Christian from God’s love! “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39). If no “created thing” can separate a Christian from God’s love, and even a Christian who commits suicide is a “created thing,” then not even suicide can separate him from God’s love. Jesus died for all of our sins...and if a true Christian were to, in a time of spiritual attack and weakness, commit suicide - that would be a sin that Jesus died for.

The deliberate ending of one`s life due to what amounts to cowardice, and by this I mean, being unwilling to endure the hardships of life is a serious sin and goes against the commandment, which states that you must not kill, this includes ourselves.
I believe that our God is a merciful and just God and will take into account the fact that some poor people are mentally ill when they do this, so the bottom line is to leave this to God Who will judge us all much fairer than even our own Mothers.

well, first off, i'm not christian or catholic. but in my belief, thats not for someone to decide. the life that was given to them is not for them to decide to end. when its time they will pass over. suicide is not going to make pain easier, in fact will make it worse from what i was taught. you need to work on what the issue is instead of avoiding it at all costs. cause no matter what you will have to deal with it. when someone commits suicide they are not brought to were they are supposed to go to if they passed on naturally or when god took them.

By committing suicide one is taking a life and not having the chance of repentance.
It is also sort of giving up on God. One should put their trust in God... Who doesn't place on us a burden greater than we can bear. We should have faith that he will also remove the burden and reward us for our patience.
Under Islamic teachings, it is also a sin.
