The difference between Midtown East and Midtown West is this. The West side is a little more touristy, faster paced and "flashy" for lack of a better word. There you'll find Times Square and the Theatre District, and Rockefeller Center. The East Side can be just as interesting, but it's a little slower paced. On the East Side you'll find Park Avenue and Grand Central Terminal.

Remember that Fifth Ave is the divider between the East and West Sides, and don't forget to spend some time right on Fifth. On Fifth you'll be able to visit St. Patrick's Cathedral, and all the shopping you desire, from Saks to Lord and Taylor to FAO Schwarz.

I would like to add however, that you should get out of midtown at least at some point during your trip. Even if you don't explore the outer boroughs, Manhattan has so much to offer. Below 14th St., you'll find areas like Greenwich Village and SoHo, and further south, Chinatown and the Financial District. Uptown, you should visit Central Park, and the Upper West and Upper East Sides.

Like the others have said, most of Manhattan, and especially Midtown is very safe. Just be sure to use caution, and be aware of your surroundings at all times, and you should be fine.

Hi! Midtown East is very, very safe. Midtown west is safe but not as much as the east side, because of the Port Authority and tunnel areas. Some of them are dark and I've seen more homeless people on the west side. If you are staying in the east side is definetely better, because you can walk at any time, day or night, the Grand Central, Times Square and Fifth Avenue are at hand, and you can always take the 6 train to go down to the Brooklyn Bridge, Ground Zero, the east village, and many beautiful places even if you want to walk!!

This is a safe part of Manhattan. It is a touristy area so there is more of a police presence. You should be fine.

However, as in any big city, use discretion. Don't keep your money all in one place. Don't go out walking alone late at night. Stay in lighted areas. Use cabs if you feel unsafe. If the 3 of you are all together out late at night in midtown, you should be fine.

Manhattan has never been safer. There is so much police presence in midtown, the streets are safe to walk at any time, that's midtown, however, don't confuse that area with parts of the Bronx and Brookly. Midtown is full of police.

the upper east side is very nice.
midtown east is touristy & crowded..
midtown west is not the greatest area.
stay alert....
don't walk around" wide eyed"
stay in a group
no subways after dark...
as safe as manhattan has become..it's still a big city...use your street smarts.
when you are in a crowd..make sure your handbag is in the front..with the zipper pull in front of you..not behind you...
( that way no one can unzip..as your waiting to cross the street)
wear / bring flat shoes..you will be doing a lot of walking!
guaranteed..you will fall in love with manhattan...
have fun!!

Yes, very safe. I have an apartment in the theatre district and I couldn't feel more secure. Manhattan, for the most part, is extremely safe nowadays.

Just hold on to your purses very tight. NY is NEVER completely safe. Sounds like the answers you got so far are from NYC tourist council, hahaha.

Absolutely! But like in any big city you have to be cautious. Stay clear of the northern areas (bronx & harlem at night).
