Increased waist circumference is caused not only by fat underneath the skin of the lower abdomen, but also by fat in the abdomen, especially in the mesentery that supports the intestines.

It leads to several unhealthy conditions:
1) GER - gastro-esophageal reflux
2) Metabolic syndrome: abdominal girth over 40 inches in males and 35 inches in females, low HDL and high LDL which leads to plaque formation in the arteries, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, and an increased tendency to form blood clots that can cause strokes.

The treatment: You've heard it before. Diet and exercise. No pills, potions, magic nostrums or sorcerous incantations. Diet and exercise!!!.

Assessment of overweight involves using three key measures:

* body mass index (BMI)
* waist circumference, and
* risk factors for diseases and conditions associated with obesity.

The BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height and waist circumference measures abdominal fat. Combining these with information about your additional risk factors yields your risk for developing obesity-associated diseases.

Excess weight, as measured by BMI, is not the only risk to your health. So is the location of fat on your body. If you carry fat mainly around your waist, you are more likely to develop health problems than if you carry fat mainly in your hips and thighs. This is true even if your BMI falls within the normal range. Women with a waist measurement of more than 35 inches or men with a waist measurement of more than 40 inches may have a higher disease risk than people with smaller waist measurements because of where their fat lies.

Because unlike hip and thigh fat, abdominal fat is located much deeper and is putting pressure on your vital organs and releasing harmful chemicals.
