Burning speed depends on your PC and your DVD burner, and your media. Software actually has little to do with it.

It depends on what you are burning. For burning ISO files and basic data DVD burning, the free program ImgBurn is one of the best and even handles dual-layer media very well. For a more general burning package, CDBurnerXP Pro is a great free program that functions in a similar manner to the Nero suite.

Roxio or Sonic Foundry, I have had really good experience with both. Nero is okay too, a bit more advanced then need though. I burnt a double layered using Roxio in just 30 minutes, it really depends on how fast your drive is and your computer's speed/RAM.
