I think the record for the longest time a person has been through without sleep is 11 days. If you try to not sleep for 7-9 days, on average most people die.

There are people who go for long periods of time without sleep but it is extremely unhealthy. Sleep deprivation can cause long term brain damage. Your body needs sleep in order to function properly. While you are alseep your body repairs itself. If you don't sleep your body won't repair itself, so you will end up with a lot of health issues.
That person must have extreme insomnia. Its not like he is a healthy person - he has a medical condition that prevents him from sleeping.

that is possible. but from lack of sleep, you loose REM(rapid eye movement) sleep, this is where you get your most restful sleep patterns, and dreams. without your brainwaves going in from alpha to beta patterns during the night, during rest, you will start having episodes. which can lead to severe mental heath issues and much more serious issues. this can seriously screw a person up. for good. mentally and physically.

I have been awake for three days with no sleep and it was no fun at all. I do not believe that your father's information is correct. Here is a websit for you to check out.

It will tell you the worlds record of how long someone went without sleep

Some kind of resting would be needed. He must be very disciplined. From everything they tell us, we need to sleep or we will die. Our immune systems would weaken...it would just be a mess.
I hope someone has found and provided a link for this guy.

Wow, my first impression is that he would die after a while, but there are pretty wierd things out there! For me, deprivation of sleep would be the absolute worst way to go.

I don't have a source, sorry. From what I know, caffeine will keep you awake but you will start seeing things from lack of sleep and you could get severe caffeine poisoning.

I'm sorry to say it but your dad is very wrong indeed. Without sleep the body shuts down and you eventually die. Your brain needs sleep to recuperate from the day.

I've heard that some insomniacs sometimes don't ACTUALLY sleep for weeks, but they do rest deeply. I know a guy who didn't sleep for about five days once.
