1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic, 6 Cyl. 4.0L
Automatic transmission. 103.000 Miles.

Hi, I am not good with autom. transmssion, I can really use some help on this one...
I bought this Jeep used 3 months ago with 100k on it; I have put 3.000 miles on it then the transmission started acting up:
When motor is cold, regardless of warm/cold weather, it is really hard to get it to shift from 1st into 2nd; it revs up as if it was in neutral and I have to play with accelerator pedal to get it to shift. When motor temperature reaches about 140/150 degrees shifting gets a lot smoother. At 200/210 degrees temperature the problem disappears completely. Any ideas? I thought it may me a faulty throttle position sensor or pressure governor, but wouldn't that be faulty all the time regardless of motor temperature? Trans. fluid looks and smells old, probably still original. Should I flush? Should I just drain and refill or should i also replace pan-gasket?
Should I also change the filter? I hear that if the filter has been sitting there for a long time it is not advicebale to replace it as it sort of bonds to the tranny in a way that once removed it may not allow the replacement filter to sit properly. Is this true?
Should I add Lucas or Pro-long or some other trannie treatment?

Please help me with any ideas, I have had really bad experiences with my local transmission shops.

THANKS!!!

I have drained all the trans. fluid thru the drain plug, no pan removal, no filter replacement. Filled with Dexeron III / Mercron... 3 qts of that plus 1 qt of Lucas to reach 4qts capacity. Waiting for motor to cool then I'll take it for a spin and we'll take it from there. Thank you all for your tips.

Ok...
This morning I tried the car on dead-cold engine conditions. It shifts MUCH MUCH MUCH better!!!!! It still feels like it wants to rev-up a little bit between 1st and 2nd... but it doesn't rev for as long or as high as it did yesterday!!! Let me first knock on wood, and then let me say YAAAAAYYY!!!! Thanks for all the tips!

After a few days car shifts great!!! New fluid and Lucas did the trick!!! I could really tell the difference much better on the 2nd day, after all the fluid had really soaked into all the componentes. Turns out the old fluid was totally bad and the main cause af failure. It came out very dark brown, almost black, and smelled burnt. My diagnosis is that with a cold transmission that goo would just mess everything up, not allowing components to move properly. As tranny got hotter the goo would break down into a sort of fluid again, allowing it to shift better as it got hotter.
Did NOT change the filter... it probably needs it but I am too afraid, and since everything works fine I am going to leave it as it is. However, I plan to fush fluid again in a month or two, to try to remove some residual goo that may have mixed up in my current fluid. then I'll do the 3 qts dexeron + 1 qt Lucas again.

happy happy jeeper :)

Since it is already near terminal, go ahead and try the flush and filter, make sure it is a true 100 percent fluid flush. Regardless what people may say, be prepared for a complete failure after the flush. If it doesn't, great!

BTW, this will be a good indicator for you, most National chain service departments wont do a fluid flush if their are indications of excessive wear and tear or other problems.

Sorry and good luck

It's going to fail anyway if you don't do anything, so don't listen to the old wives tales about flushing hurting it and filters. Do a proper service and a flush. You can't expect anything to work with 100,000 mile old fluid in it. No additive is going to turn that gunk into transmission fluid.

Yes, I would try Lucas, it works wonders. I just had to replace a transmission in my Pontiac after it burnt up. My clutch sprag went out. I wish you luck... it's not cheap if the tranny is blown.
