Well, I was in my fashion class and my friend and I got into a discussion on how to pronounce "haute." I pronounce it like "out," and she says "hawt." Who is right, or are we both wrong?

Both are wrong.

It's like "Oht" like "o" ...like the sound in "oat" or "boat"

The "h" is silent

Does that make sense? :/ Hope this helps :)

Try to make it sound French :P

The word "haute" is French and it means "high".
French don't pronounce the "H" especially when it's at the beginning of the word.. It's silent..
That's why they say "oat" and not "hawt" or "out".

Proper pronunciation can be tricky; haute is somewhere between ought and oat, pronounced quickly so that the o is highly unrounded ("oh", if held long enough, ends up sounding like a /oo/). couture is pronounced ko'tur with a highly unrounded 'o', a 'u' that sounds almost like a german umlaut, and an 'r' made in a way similar to gargling.

Alternatively, you could pronounce it in a very American fashion as 'ought kuh-ter'.

As stated above - "oat"

(Of course phonologically is is not identical to oat, but it's so close only experts will perceive the difference.)
