I have a 1997 Ford Econoline van with a 5.4 triton V/8 engine that unfortunalty somebody put deisel insted of gas in. It sat for two years and when we finally got it started and after a new fuel pump and line & tank flush it's not getting full compression on three cylinders and, it's smoking.

It is a relative long shot... but the smoking problem could be temporary. It may be that the introduction of Deisel fuel to the cylinder(s) may have knocked/cleaned carbon & other gunge from behind the rings... making them regain the movement & springiness they loose with build up of contamination.

The rings may have to re-seat themselves given their "Liberation."

I experianced a very similar condition when I changed up to a premium grade... High detergency oil in a small car I owned, with about 40,000 miles on the clock.

The car smoked horribly for about a week, but recovered... the rings re-seated and... The last I heard, that car was over the 130,000 mile mark, and had not missed a beat!
