HDMI is a point to point bus. You need a "source" like a DVD player and a "sink", such as a TV.
Signals can "pass through" (using for example an AV Receivers).
So this will work
DVD----> AVR------> TV
(in other words, HDMI works differently than i.Link/1394)

You can, but you will need an HDMI extender to protect from signal loss. It can certainly become an issue connecting several together.
