My mom had knee replacement surgery over ten years ago. Afterwords she healed and went to rehabilitation and now she is 79 years old and pain free! She worked until 2 years ago and said she wishes she would have had the surgery much sooner. She could barely walk before, she had a cane and a walker to help her and like you said stairs were impossible for her. The pain medicine never freed here from pain upon walking. I hope this information helps, go see a good orthopedist and feel better soon. Good luck.

Believe it or not..becoming more mobile..just walking a little at a time and building up. Plus taking an anti inflamatory like 800 mg of ibuprophen will help. If he is heavy..loseing some of the weight will help. A brace on his knees will alleviate some of the discomfort. A Doc would be his best resource.

There is nothing you can really do besides pain medication and trying to not over due any walking or exercise. I have arthritis in both knees and its not fun try Icing the knees and then use a heating pad that sometimes works for me.

Just remember some meds don't go well with ibuprofen and motrin and take it too often or too much and it can screw up your stomach. Go to www.footsmart.com. Little things like sole inserts and knee braces can help some with the pain. Also find a good sporting good site or go straight to www.cramersportsmed .com and try some of their balms, and they also have some great knee supports. Support and stability are crucial with any knee problems. Also try the NIAMS site good luck

There are some pain medications that will help a bit but there is no cure for arthritis. Check with a doctor or pharmacist on those. The best thing to do so it doesn't get worst is to keep active. Those who don't only deteriorate more.

He should take ibuprofen or naproxen but take a prescription amount of either med at least twice a day. He should also see his doc to be sure it is arthritis and not something that could be fixed medically. Glucosamine also helps.
