Chicano is a word which was made up in southern California, to mean a first generation US born Mexican-American, within 10 years it generally was used to mean "Mexican gang banger" (like the words "cholo", "vato" and "esa").
Hispanic is of Spanish- european blood, or heritage.
Latino is of the Latin language race, a "latino" is someone with european blood/heritage.
Mexicans are called hispanic in California also, not usually "latino".
Mexicans in Florida are called "latino" too

Chicanos are US born hispanics. they are called chicanos is california because california has a high population of hispanics, and they DON'T like to be confused with Mexicans. we call them hispanics in texas because we have a lot of immigrants here, legal and illegal, and you don't know if someone is from mexico, or guatemala, or wherever, so hispanic is a term that includes everyone...US born or otherwise. and they are called Latinos in chicago because....see my california example, and that's the word they want to use in that area.

because of the fact we proportion the Spanish language and the history or Spanish colonization. Quiet attempting to stir issues up. i'm Mexican and Nicaraguan... So i'm ethnically Latino. The Latino custom enables us to be closer to a minimum of one yet another. Anglo custom in simple terms separates a and dilutes each physique until they understand no longer something approximately their ancestry.

Chicanos is a self imposed derogatory term, but they chose
to use it. Hispanic, is a Politically Correct Term, used to cover
anyone with a surname of unfamilar origin. Latinos, is blanket
term to cover, those from Latin American Countries.

Chicanos are a mixture of white and Mexican. Hispanic is anyone born in a Latin American country or Spain, regardless of race. Latinos is anyone with Latin ancestry. All three are different.

The term "Mexican" referes to nationality. This is any person who was born in Mexico.
When a Mexican comes to the USA (ignore legal status right now) and has children that are BORN here in the USA, these children are "Americans."
These children often refer to themselves and are referred to by others as Chicanos. This is a term used generally to mean "first generation" born in the USA, to parents born elsewhere where Spanish is spoken, but NOT the USA. It could be Mexico or some other country.
These children are also Mexican-Americans, or just Americans, like you, if YOU were born in America.
The term "Hispanic" refers to ethnicity. Which is your "race." Examples of races are: White, Caucasian, Black, Pacific Islander, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, etc.
Some people think "ethnicity" just means your skin color, but that is not the case. Someone with black skin, could consider themselves Hispanic and Black at the same time. Their skin could be Black, Brown or somewhere in-between.
"Latino" usually refers to those from Latin America which is referring to those from Mexico on down to the bottom of South America. The term "Latinos" sometimes is used to refer to those who speak Spanish, or are of Hispanic heritage. There is a "Latina" magazine that targets women who consider themselves of a Hispanic origin.
The term "Latino" should not be used to describe someone from Spain, even though they speak Spanish. They are Spanish, or Spaniards.
Reality, if you ask someone who speaks Spanish, "where they are from" they will tell you the country.
There are many people who are Black and speak Spanish who are Haitian, Cuban, Puertorican, Dominicans and those from Equatorial Guinea which is in Africa, and many other countries.
Long ago people were referred to as: German, Irishman, Frenchman, Dutchman, Chinaman, Englishman, Mexican etc.
Finally we went to "American". Maybe when we became the "melting pot?"
If we followed the above examples, we should probably be called "United Statesman of America." Maybe someone thought that was too wordy. But just to let you know, Mexico is in North America, so they are "Americans" too. In fact, the real name of the country of Mexico is "Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos." Sound familiar? It is "The United States of Mexico." There are 31 states in Mexico and they have a Federal District (like our Washington D.C.).
