What if it's a salvage but the owner doesn't tell me. How would I know? Where does it state its a salvage?

it should say right on the title if this has been a previous salvage title or you can talk to your secretary of state and run the vin number to see if it had issues.

Car fax is a reputable way of finding out but, in my past experience some auto dealers/body shops have managed to get around the law of reporting such damage. This is being done by state to state title transfer. I would suggest that you take it to a Car Max as if to trade and ask for an appraisal or to a legitimate body shop. All states require a damage disclosure form to be signed during the purchase. Be careful that it doesn't actually state of the damage unbeknown to you.
