I believe I do not need to pay california state tax for the income earned from massachusetts. However, california state tax form schedule 540 does not have a item to deduct out of state income from federal adjusted gross income. do you know how to file california state tax for income from other states?

When you are filling out the Cali form just put on there the income you earned and then then attach a copy of the other state's "non-resident" form and they will know what you have done .... and they will gie you credit for the taxes you have already paid so you will not have to double pay!!

Good Luck!

Sorry, but you belive wrong.

If you're a CA resident, your world wide income from all sources is subject to CA income tax. That MA income is fully taxable by the State of California. It's also taxable by MA, but CA will give you a credit for any MA taxes paid. The net effect is that you'll pay income tax at the higher of the two state rates.

It may have some validity, I know other states that have similar laws, Washington State will ticket people that buy their cars in Oregon but live in Washington (Oregon has no state taxes) this way they get away from paying taxes in Washington.
