Make sure the batteries are fully charged and that there is no corrosion on the contacts. Some times they get bent down a bit and won't make good contact. I had that happen to me on a job the other day with my Vivatar flash that I use on my Pentax DSLR and I was able to carefully reach in with my little finger and flex them up a little, put the batteries back in and finished the birthday party I was shooting.
