I had a girlfriend that acted different around me than when we were around other people. I hated it and called her on her fakeness. She said it was a problem, continued to do it, and I just gave up on her. Though I ended up going back to her and breaking up again.
A guy has to like you for who you are. You cannot act shy for the rest of your life around him. Seems as though you are scared that if he knows you are a "wild child," he might not approve. What you could do is show him a little bit of who you truly are, a little by little, every week, month, or when ever you are ready. If he cares about you, things will only get better.

It's because you must really like this guy. He intimidates you to make you feel shy because you want to impress him and you don't know if he'll like the real you or not! But just know that you should act yourself around anyone. If he doesn't like you for you than forget him! :-) Goodluck!

Why do you do it? or, what should you do?
Well you do it because there's some reason that you don't feel comfortable around him. You have to decide why that is. Then, ask yourself if it's something that can be addressed and fixed, or if it's a deal breaker for you. Make your decision based on that. You shouldn't repress yourself for anybody.
