Thanx for the answers so far, lm from Vegas so l know how the heat is like, l know Barstow and how close it is from places, l just dont know the base, l dont know how big or small it is.
my thing is, if l get stationed there l would not have to deploy right? because lrwin is there to support not top get deployed, right?
would be perfect for me becouse l have a house in Vegas which l could go every weekend...

National Training Center! Avoid it at all costs!

I am retired Army but I work on Ft Irwin. First the nearest town is Barstow 34 miles away, a long drive. Housing on post is pretty good it is best you and your wife get quarters on post I don't recommend Barstow. Irwin is the National Training Center where all units train from around the country, we primarily focus on Iraq training now. The 11 Armored Cavalry Regiment is the unit stationed there and you will most likely be assigned to it. They are the Opfor for all units training at the base. The post is small base but it has everything. Las Vegas where I live is 150 miles from Post a straight shot down I-15 about 2/1/2 to 3 hours to get there. Of your three cities Irwin is the Only base close to any one of them, It will be alright you'll get along fine here. Good Luck

Ft.Iriwn National Training Center..NTC for short...it is used for desert training..Many troops deployed to Iraq and Afganistan have been trained there.
A few never came home. The home for the 668th and 111th. The 668 just returned from Afganistan and lost 3 people...pretty hard since the 111th lost 2 people in Iraq the year before.
It's a close nit community they have been building new homes for on base personel...they are the best places you could imagine.
Barstow is the nearest town about 40 miles south..if you could get base housing it would be a benefit. Especially on gas which is running about $3.30 avg here.
If you have a children you would most likley be getting a new home not some old 50's stylle housing....they eliminated all the mobile home housing this year.
Barstow takes care of their own...we also have The Marine corp. logistics base and NEBO
another Marine corp base.

Besides...Vegas is far..considering you could be at Primm @ stateline in about 2 hrs. adn if Vegas is what you want ..it's only another 1.5 hrs away.

Hope to have you as part of the family here.

I should warn you though..the temps avg about 112* during summer adn no breeze and it's a dry heat.
Winter can get as low as 12* again dry...better bring lots of chapstick for the "windy season" which is about now..the winds can sustain 45mph and it's a dry wind.

For Irwin is not a bad area, some soldiers live on base and others live in Barstow. if your from Las Vegas then your used to the heat. other then that it is a national training centre and they are on the go quite alot.
