I know people will commit sins, but didn't the Crucifixion essentially forgive these sins? Why is eternal damnation even an option if He died for us? I have pondered this for a long time and have never understood it adequately. What are your thoughts?

This is not an automatic thing but is contingent on your acceptance of the sacrifice Christ made for you! Jesus died to release you from the penalty of sin! If you do not accept the atonement gift that Christ is offering, then God will hold you responsible for your own sin! It's like this, if you are arrested and the judge says," pay this fine or go to jail!"You say, "but I don't have any money!" Some stranger steps up to pay this fine for you so you don't have to go to jail! You would have to accept his offer in order to prevent going to jail or paying the fine yourself! The same way with God who will judge all of us! He will say to you after He judges you guilty,"Why should you not have to pay for your own sin?" You will be able to say, "I have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus. My sins are paid in full!" You will then be given a pass to eternal life! Nothing else will redeem you of sin. It has to be the blood of Christ who was the perfect Lamb that takes away the sins of the world! You cannot work your way into eternal life! You must be redeemed by Christ!

To accept this precious gift that Jesus is offering you all you have to do is confess to God that you are a sinner in need of Jesus and his precious blood to atone for your sins. Ask for forgiveness and that Christ walk with you as your personal savior and he live in your heart. Let the Lord lead you. It is not that hard. God bless you!

Jesus died so sins could be forgiven.

Contrition, accompanied by repentance, is still required to receive forgiveness for sins, just as it always was.

Enslaved to Satan, sin, and death as a result of Adam's sin, man couldn't have repented even if he wanted to.

Jesus destroyed Satan's power, and he gave us the freedom to reject Satan, and swear faithful allegiance to him, in baptism.

Baptism washes away all existing sins, while timely and proper contrition, coupled with true repentance, takes care of the rest.

Catholics have an advantage here, because they have the benefit of a sacrament that was instituted by Christ, for the specific purpose of dealing with sin.

Catholics, availing themselves of the sacrament of reconciliation, know immediately whether God has accepted their apology, and forgiven their sins ... or not.

Others will need to wait until Judgment Day to find out.

Peace!

We are to accept his sacrifice and ask forgiveness for the sins we commit ed. Acknowledgment of Jesus and turn form your sin full ways and follow Jesus's teachings found in the bible are essentials to receive the gift of salvation. even Satan believes in God and Jesus but does not repent and continues to pervert and mock God's ways that which is Holy.

Oh, I love folks who think! No common sense in the matter, huh? Why? Because it simply isn't based in truth...your soul sounds only speak & understand truth, ergo, you won't get that happy knowing feeling pondering on that which is not...See?

Jesus was not crucified for our "sins"...he was hung up on a cross, a great punishment of the time, as a way of removing him from the spotlight with a fearful messege attached for his followers. In fact, he did not die in this situation at all, but that's a story in itself.

Now, think on this...if we were created by & contain in our human form a part, of a grand being referred to as "God", and we were provided these lifetimes to be that which we choose (free-will choice)...why would such condemn any part of itself? And what would be a "sin" when this being does not operate within the limitations we place upon humanness? Do you imagine a being of pure energy, of unconditional love--unconditional meaning no limits, no conditions, no matter what--having infantile human qualities?

Bet that gets your mind & heart cookin'...great!!! And Good Journey!

John 3:16 "for God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten son, that whomsoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life". Note the word: believes.

If you spend any time on Yahoo R&S....you will see many mockers and many scoffers. Only those who repent of their sins and believe in Jesus as their savior will be saved.

It is a matter of acknowledging that Christ actually died. If someone offers you a gift, and you reject it and give it back, can you enjoy the gift? No, so that is why you need to accept the gift of salvation through Jesus in order to enjoy eternal life. Hope that helps. www.gotquestions.org

Because we reject/ignore the free gift of salvation, usually trying to live on our own goodness.look at it this way, if I wrote you a check, to cover all of your expenses, and you merely left it lay on a table, or stuck it in your pocket, it doesn't do much good. You(and only you), need to endorse, the back of the check. Your parents, friends, well wishers in life, no matter how bad they want to help you, cannot cash that check. Jesus said; "as many have received him, he gives us the right to become children of God. To those who believe on his name" The work has been done. The ball is in our court

He didnt die for the forgiveness of sins but for the penalty of sins making attonement with His blood. Now everyone is not condemened to hell by their sins but because of their denial of Jesus. Sin still has consequences and you will add to your judgement continuing to live in it and for it.

It is simple.
Jesus finished work on the cross is acceptable to GOD as a sacrifice for our sins. Is it acceptable to you? Are you willing to trade in your old self for a new self in Christ Jesus? That's all it takes.
Simple but not easy.

Christ made it possible for us to overcome the original sin of Adam. He also made it possible for us to overcome sin in this world. If we choose to sin, Christ can not help us. If we choose not to sin, Christ will forgive us and help us overcome sin. If we sin, we immediately ask for forgiveness.
