you told them to go and find their shoes and they came back after searching 2 to the minus 27th percent of their room (that is very very near 0%) and told you "not only could I not find them, I am positive there are no shoes"?

I would tell them to look again.

"Seek and ye shall find".

First, I would laugh at them.

Second, I would tell them to go and look at the end of their bed, underneath the pile of laundry they had just thrown on the floor, in an obvious attempt to loose their homework. The shoes are most likely there!

Third, my child would know better than to try and claim "the shoes do not exist, because I cannot find them." I bought those shoes with them present, so the nonsense claim falls apart under the eyewitness account.

The homework, on the other hand, may or may not exist......

Actually they should not search the whole room, they should not search the ceiling, the space in the centre of the room 3 feet above the ground and so on.

Sorry what was your point again?

They searched very nearly 0% of their room?
Did they even look into their room?

Hey, I've searched for shoes. They're not there, and anyway, it's not up to me to find shoes, it's up to the shoes to show themselves, that's if they want me to acknowledge their existence.

Believe it or not, my 7yo son would DO this, including stating the percentage. I'd tell him to go back and keep looking.

And this has no relevance to religion. I know what you're getting at, and it's a lousy analogy.

"Poor thing, I guess you're not going." That usually helps my kids to find their shoes.

tell them they better look again, because if I go in there and find them we're not going anywhere fun for a long time

One thing I wouldn't do is damn them to eternal torment.

I'd help them look for their shoes.
