I'm planning a trip to Alaska from Oregon. I have found very little info on requirements for entering Canada. I really need any info on gun and pet requirements & restrictions. Also ID needed, such as passport or picture, birth certificate etc. I have heard money is needed to be shown to border personnel. How much, & is it per person or vehicle or entire party if taking multiple cars. Any & all entry info greatly appreciated. I have called many agencies & been told conflicting info. Also I would love to hear about the trip itself. Like how are the roads, Places of interest. Also what is the farthest distance between gas stations? This is our first trip to Alaska & we are very excited to visit. Thanks for any help you can provide.

1) Each person crossing will need photo ID (drivers license, etc) and proof of citizenship (i.e. birth certificate).

2) The amount of money needed, which usually is not checked, but can be, since you are traveling through Canada to Alaska, will be funds sufficient for getting to Alaska, for food, and for lodging. You do not have to have the cash on your person, you can have it available in a bank account, but can be asked to provide proof of balance.

3) Handguns are absolutely not allowed in Canada without special permits AND strict regulations. Long guns are allowed to be transported. The website listed below will help, browse through to find the transporting firearms regulations.

4) Pets are allowed, and you will need proof of current rabies vaccination. You need the actual paperwork, just the collar tag is not enough. A certificate of health is not a bad idea, but I have never been asked for one in hundreds of crossings with my pets.

5) Get in the habit of stopping in each town once you get past Prince George and asking when the next place to get gas is. Always keep your tank half full (i.e. if you go through a town as it is nearing the halfway mark, top it off, don't wait).

6) Don't forget your camera!

For ID, all you need is photo ID and a way to verify your citizenship. Your passport should do for this.

Keep in mind, not only are you entering Canada from the US, but going to Alaska, you are actually entering the US from Canada. Because US Customs are generally more strict than their Canadian counterparts, you would be fairly safe to gear your planning towards the US border, and the Canadian border should be a breeze.

Pets are allowed only if you have the proper written documentation for rabies, etc.

Guns are not allowed. If you are going hunting in Alaska, I'd recommend getting your guns shipped. If you don't have a place you can ship them to, I know the US Post Office has a method of shipping where you can pick up your package without having a PO Box.

If you have a passport or "proof of citizenship" (birth Cert.), that is all that is required. Pets will need veterinarian papers stating they are healthy and have all their shots. BRINGING GUNS INTO CANADA IS ABSOLUTELY NOT ALLOWED UNLESS YOU ARE A CAN. RESIDENT AND THE GUNS ARE REGISTERED AND ARE ONLY BEING TRANSPORTED (such as from a hunting trip). Since you are going from state to state (Alaska) and have to go through Canada, there may be a special transporting permit...check it out . Canada is pretty sticky on guns. You will have to contact "Canada Customs and Excise" before you leave. They have a website....type in Canada Customs for contact numbers.

You will need your passport or birth certificate, I know for a fact that guns are not allowed across the border, Canada has strict laws for guns. Not sure about pets, I am sure that those will be fine.
