Because John's appearance on the scene was also told by early prophets. Some people took that to mean that he was the Messiah. Read Malachi 4:5,6, Luke 1:15 Luke 1:67-79

He had the correct bloodline, like his cousen Jesus. He preached, sacrificed, and was respected by the religous. But, there weren't many prophets to speak of, when he and his cousen were preaching.

the prophets didnt. some followers and listeners of john did because his speaking and reverence for the lord was so strong!!

It was the Pharisees that asked him if he was .Of course he said no.Malachi and Isaiah potray him as the one who comes before and straightens the path.

John was safe. He didn't come into Jerusalem and confront them on their hypocrisy. He waited until they came to him, so if they didn't come to him, they were cool with him.
