Yes they issue them toward the end of boot camp. All US Military have them.

Yes its a requirement. if you are killed and cannot be distinguished your dog tags will let the person know who you are or if you are knocked out the medic will know what type of blood to give you, also what your religion is in case you need a chaplin.

in Australia we are issued 2 dog tags/USA is the same i thing.if a soldier is killed in action.one dog tag is placed in his mouth the other taken back to base headquarters.sad but true

davidt is right, that is how the dog tags are used one is left with the body if it has to be left, but everything is done to ensure that no troops are left behind unless absolutely necessary and other liefs are at risk

sure they do. my husband has his and many wear them in their boot laces, although i don't think they're supposed to in case their boots have to be cut off.
anyway, i'm not sure when they get them....probably when they get out of boot camp. that would be logical.
