I had surgery yesterday and I tried to take two Tylenol an hour ago for the pain. My doctor gave me hydrocodone for it, but I thought I would try the Tylenol. It is not working. Can I take the Hydrocodone even though I took two Tylenol an hour ago?

You left out one vital piece of information. What strength was the Tylenol that you took? If they were extra strength then they are 500mg each. Otherwise they were regular strength at 325 mg each.
Tylenol in large doses are toxic to the liver.
Did your doctor reccommend tylenol or motrin?
Taking a vicodin now won't kill you but I would contact your doctor's office regarding what else to take for break through pain. Those vicodin have 500 mg of tylenol in them and as I mentioned too there is such a thing as too much tylenol. There should either be a number for an hours doctor or for an advise nurse who will know what your doctor reccommends. This number should be on your discharge paperwork.
The idea with pain medication is to not waite until it hurts so bad to take the medicine because it then takes more medicine to get the pain under control.
It is a lot easier to take one pill when your pain is a 5 out of 10 then to try to get relief with 2 pills when the pain is a 10 out of 10.

You can take the Hydrocodone but you need to be aware of how much tylenol you are taking. Tylenol is acetaminophen and that is the APAP in Hydrocodone. You are not supposed to take more then 4 grams of tylenol in 24 which would be 8 Hydrocodone. So you need to look and see how much tylenol you already took and then be aware when you are taking the Hydrocodone.

Your hydrocodone also has 500 mg tylenol (acetominophin) in each tablet. Thats equivalent to one extra-strength tylenol, plus the narcotic. You may want to wait a while. However, taking one of the hydrocodone tabs probably won't hurt you if you're really in pain. Be cautious taking your prescription and OTC tylenol at the same time!

You already have some good answers here, but no one mentioned that the hydrocodone/APAP might make you nauseated (one of the side effects). If it does, make sure you take it with food, not on an empty stomach. It's a great pain reliever if it doesn't make you sick. Also my doctor always prescribes Phenergan along with it because I do get nauseated. Works great to prevent any nausea.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

I have been taking 750/750 es Vicodin for chronic pain.
You are just not supposed to take over 2500 mg of tylenol per 24 hours because it has to be metabolized.
Make sure you stop taking it as soon as you can or not over 14 days . It is extremely addictive and you will get very sick if you stop taking it after taking it daily for a month or more.
Your life will be ruined.
I have been through this for years and it is wrose than you hear about it.

depends on the dose of tylenol you took already. i'm assuming that you took two 250 mg of tylenol so you could take the hydrocodone now. if you took a higher dose than that then no, wait 4 hrs and then take your pain pills.

Dr Jazz did not mention that to much tylenol will cause sever kidney problems. You can take 1 tablet within this time but do not exceed 2000mgs of tylenol in any given day.

Yes you can. And when it wears off, take the next dosage of Vicodin BEFORE the pain gets strong, you will have a much better chance of keeping the pain down that way.
