Lets say I have a radio that is operated by batteries, it is not turned on, yet it will turn itself on and off whenever it wants to. Another example is a child toy, again not turned on, battery operated, and it comes on and goes off by itself from time to time... is it because the batteries are going bad or would something else be the problem?

Do you believe in ghosts? The key to my question is that you referred to "several items in your home". One might be something worth our technology to pursue, but "several"?? No way. Unless you have a rather large collection of Furbies and the like.

!!batteries have nothing to do with the on/off switch! even if this where a legit question, it just could not happen! only a short in the on/off switch would cause this,, like water or humidity in the contacts.... or the thing is possessed!!!

Something else. If the batteries were bad, it would not work at all.
