It continued because the founding fathers did not want to get on anyone's bad side. Slavery was still too popular back then. Some of them also had slaves of their own and did not want to give them up.

Slavery continues to this day. Slavery has been a way of life for at least 4000 years. The only way some could survive was by becoming slaves. It is not necessarily a bad thing. If you watch too much TV and read books like "Roots" you can get a distorted picture of slavery. Go back and check your history-75% of white Europeans who were in the USA at the signing of the Declaration of Independence were slaves or indentured servants.
Many people are slaves today and do not know it-just think about it.

I wonder the same thing. I was just on a tour at Thomas Jefferson's house and they said that he often stated that he didn't like slavery and didn't agree with it, yet he still had slaves anyway. But I think he freed them in his will. I guess owning slaves was such a norm back then that his need for slaves outweighed any hypocricy on his part. Kinda lame. Also, the constitution was really meant for white men. Women were certainly not included in "all men are created equal." Or any other race. Such bs.

In order to get the Congress to vote for Independence, it was necessary to make many concessions. Thomas Jefferson originally wanted slavery to be abolished with the Declaration of Independence. Why not see the movie 1776?

Think of who really started the US, quakers- puritians- etc.
Very religious people who felt they were supreme to everyone else... supremacy generally means that they have to have someone they can be supreme to and unfortunely that meant people of color.
Did you know that the Emancipation Procomation never actually freed any slaves since all it declared was that colored people in already northen occupied lands were free- they already were before the document was signed so it never really did free anyone...
BTW- Lincoln had no intention of ending slavery and the civil war broke out before he did anything about slavery- it was an action based on rumors of what others thought he might do! If they had the radio or TV back then the civil war would never have started... food for thought...

That's like asking why the Constitution was required even though we had the Magna Carta before it. The answer is, it didn't cover everyone. But the Constitution was amended in order to correct that, because it had provisions to do so. So what's your complaint? Social structures take time to change.

Because the evil of this world was just as present back then as it is now. People just continued to fall into the devil's trap which was using and abusing others along with their so called race power. People have and still can be cruel.

This is going to sound really bad and I want to stress it is NOT how I think at all.
The reason is Black people were not considered to be people but animals. This type of mindset is still present today in members of the KKK & Neo Nazi's. It doesn't make it right but this idea was justified in the bible!
Makes me sick to think such ignorance could ever have been believed!

Why do we still not treat people equal under the law today? Gays and Lesbians are still not given the same rights to work and marriage as straights.

Probably because some of the signers of the Declaration of Independence had slaves. Also, you have to understand the times, blacks were not considered equal,
