What is the best software for recording music onto a PC running XP?

What is the best software for recording music onto a PC running XP?

I'm thinking of something along the lines of Apples Garage Band. No more than $400. I want to be able to record in live settings (not just one instrument at a time). I play jazz, fusion, rock, etc (not that that matters, but I'm just saying there's usually 3-6 instruments when I play).
