my friend bought a dvd player, and we download .avi in the internet and burn it on a dvd or a cd, then we try to play it in his dvd player, some .avi files can be read and some are not, we thought that the problem would be the codec since that the manual said that it can be upgraded,

but the question is how?
can anyone answer this, please

thanks

AVI is a quite generic File container that may include a variety of codecs. Most probably your DVD player can just play Divx movies (in a .avi file).

In any case, if it is upgradable, it usually can only be done via CD-R or recordable DVD. You go to the manufacturer's web site, download a firmware upgrade, you burn it on a CD/DVD and then put on your player. Your player will recognize it and upgrade itself.

As AVDADDY's answer suggests, these home theater systems really are a rip off. If you are the type person who will ever look to upgrade or wants versatility, then stay as far away from these systems as possible. If you are serious about wanting a decent AV system, you would be better off shopping around for a used receiver (in good condition, of course) and building onto that. There is no shame in buying used. In fact, my entire computer surround sound system consists of a used Harman/Kardon AVR7200 receiver (orginally $1,100), Mirage M290is speakers (originally $1,200 per pair), and a 12" Infinity subwoofer. I got all of it for less than $500, and it sounds great. It's like buying a car. Your home theater in a box system is like a new Yugo, while my system is like a 5-year-old lexus. Which would you rather have? Stop buying crap!!!
