I don't really blame the politicians as much as the Court. They've taken laws with clear intentions and wording and simply interpreted them as they wish. They've done it for years.
Take a look at everything that both the minority and majority wrote in Plyler vs Doe, 1982.

Wow good question. I've been a book lover for years so I've read tons of them. But one that moved me and really connected with me was "Where the Red Fern Grows". I think I was maybe 13 or 14 when I read it. At that age it took a lot to make me cry. I had really thick skin you could say. Kept everything inside. We were on a long family car trip. I think we were driving from GA to CT (about an 18hr drive. That's my dad for you. lol). We'd drive all the way through. I remember crying so hard when the dogs died. I was sitting in the back seat just crying hard. My parents got worried about me since I am not a crier! My mom wasn't a read then and neither was my father. My sister was to young so no one understood what was wrong with me! My mom almost made me put the book down I was so torn up about it. I think I have only read it just one more time because it still affects me that way. I've seen the movie and also sequel a few times though and it is one of those rare movies that are as good as the book.

To the people who say that the US no longer goes by this... You are correct, but only to a certain point. When Th's was written there were times of trade. People actually worked for what they needed and if they needed something different they would trade or sell for it.
Now we have the weak. We let them be weak. We give them everything they need and complain that they don't get enough. It's sad when poverty is socially acceptable, and we point fingers instead o trying to strengthen our position. You're lucky you live in the US... Cause no where else would give you a free ride.
We should listen to Thomas Hobbes and exile the weak so we can keep these powerful words true to our nation. The handicapped who never served, the welfare bums, whatever.
I am not picking on anyone here. If someone is mentally challenged and can't help themselves... They can help us prosper by being medical experiments like they have been since psychology has been created.

Except for the Bible, better words have never been written!
I've been around long enough to remember when those words meant something.
I think that things started to get "watered down" in the early-60's.
If I had to pick an influential person that started the downfall , I would pick JFK...you can throw in Robert and Ted too!
One day, I hope that all of the people will understand the importance of those words...and the words " a government by and for the people".
I must be having a bad day! In California: " it is a government for the Unions and by the Unions...".

The words written were by a peoples Government that once understood that this is a country built by the people and it's Government.
Unless your rich enough not to be affected by the decisions of this Government.
This Government is not for the people any more.
And alot of us either don't see this, or can't do anything about it.
Demonstrations sure aren't going to work.
It didn't work dureing Veitnam,,and it's not happening now either. I'll always support our troops where ever they are fighting,,,But It's a history of our forfathers that made this country great, and this government is tearing it down.
Slowly,,brick by brick.

EDIT: I know the case. It basically set forth the intermediate scrutiny standard for a non-suspect class. But that case dealt with a specific provision of the 14th Amendment, and whether the law (Texas, if I remember correctly) adequately met the standard for discriminating against those children. And it was resolved primarily on preemption grounds, saying that states cannot override the authority of Congress.
Yes, the Courts have made some whoppers of mistakes, but overall I think they have done a pretty good job of trying to balance the other interests (liberty, welfare, security, tranquility) in the name of justice.
Certainly, the courts have caused far less damage and trampled far less on the ideals contained in the Preamble than have legislators. And personally, I think the courts have done more to support those ideals than the legislators ever could.

Unfortunately, some people take "promote the general welfare" out of context, and they want it to mean "provide welfare."
The government promotes the general welfare by keeping taxes low, protecting individual rights, and maintaining free enterprise as examples.
