Jason,
good question. I have one and have had it since I left the military. I just simply wash it in cold water in the washing machine - as though I were washing my Blue Jeans, but since it takes up so much space it is the only thing I wash in the washer machine when the sleeping bag goes in. You probably already would know this from common sense, but place the bag in the washer one end at a time and circle the center piece if your washer is a top loader, for side loaders simply place it in and wash.

Cold water, and a little downy will help for the rinse cycle. I still use my bag - it is great for camping.

I'm assuming you have the big ECWCS one, with the black, green, and outer bivy liners.

(1) Wash the bivy in cold water only and let air dry. Do NOT throw this one into a dryer; it degrades the Gore-Tex shell.

(2) You can safely wash the thinner green by itself in a civilian washer and dry it normally.

(3) You are probably going to bang up your civilian washer something fierce if you wash your thick black one. Just take that and the green to a laundromat where they have the extra big washers and dryers. Pay the quarters to get it done. Dries better that way too.

Have fun.

If it's a green down mummy bag, go ahead and put in the washing machine. I have one and have washed and dryed it several times with no problems.

Throw it in the washer, and then in the dryer. When you put in the dryer put something else in that will "beat" it. This helps to fluff the down.

Is it washable? There should be a tag on it saying how to clean it.
