How do I unstick a sunroof on a 1988 Volvo 740? The sunroof motor died when it went back into the roof and now it's stuck open. I'm pretty good about trying to fix things on my own, yet I'm no mechanic. How tough is this job and is it possible to do in a couple hours?

I had a 1985 760 Turbo with the same problem. Here are the steps you should take to diagnose the problem.

1. Check the fuse. You might get lucky.
2. Above the rear view mirror is a plastic cover. Remove the cover, then turn the manual closer (I think it uses an allen wrench). Turn it a little and try the power - it could be that the motor has a bad spot.
3. Remove the motor assembly (I think it is held on with three phillips screws (take it off from inside the car). You'll need to replace this (try the junk yard).

This should fix your problem. Hopefully it is just #1 or #2.

Good luck!

OK...I'm not 100% percent sure how to replace the sunroof motor, it would probably be a pain to get to it, but it would certainly be an easy swap once you get to it.

To get the sunroof back closed, most (almost all) cars have a manual sunroof crank somewhere. It may require a special tool or a Torx set, but they all have it.

If it helps, and nobdy else has answered, I'll look at my 850 manual and see where mine is...it might help you out a little.

many times it is the switch that has gone bad [if roof opened normaly without hesitation or binding] i have had luck spraying w-d 40 into switch and getting roof to close then order the customer a new switch. if this doesnt work remove cover and use allen wrench handle in tool kit [if still there] to close if not there i believe it was a 5mm in size.

Whats preserving it's certainly the gasket, as a few are sealed with rtv and such. Try to pry it aside, and likewise be certain there is no bolt hiding below a pulley. Hope that is helping.
