War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.
A man who had nothing for which he is willing to fight; nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety; is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

god bless the heroes who have the courage to face death fighting for freedom and liberty overseas ...

Here are a few of my favorites:

"Most people say that it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character."
— Albert Einstein, Swiss-American mathematician, physicist and public philosopher (1879-1955)

"Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike."
— Theodore Roosevelt, American adventurer and 26th president (1858-1919)

"Character, not circumstance, makes the person."
— Booker T. Washington, American educator and civil rights activist (1856-1915)

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us."
— Ralph Waldo Emerson, American essayist, philosopher and poet (1803-1882)

Interesting perspective. But consider it in more depth.

It rejects out of hand the fact that someone might be a true pacifist, and disapprove of violence for any reason.

It also says that anyone who is more concerned with his own life than what others around him think is worthless. But it doesn't take into account that that person who refuses to fight might disagree with what those others around thim think.

But I do agree that someone who refuses to stand up for any cause -- and that includes a pacifist refusing to stand up using non-violent means -- has little in the way of character, or even personal identity.

Excellent Quote! By the way...there is no such thing as being born a pacifist....if someone is trying to choke you, are you going to be passive?

cowardice comes in many forms...some exist in misery simply because they believe that they cannot -alone- effect change or remove that which oppresses them...
some are brainwashed from birth to never challenge their master and never allowed to learn anything except their governmental or "religious" doctrine...
Character is more than one aspect of an individuals belief system.....
