Or will Louis' 25 straight defenses ever be matched or overtaken for that matter?

Ruslan Chagaev is the new WBA heavyweight champ, after winning a 12 round majority decision over previously unbeaten Nikolay Valuev (welcome to the Ivan Drago era).
It was a good match, with Chagaev boxing a clever tactical fight, and taking advantage of Valuev's inability to figure out a leftie.
He now becomes the third southpaw heavyweight champ in history.
The talk up until now has been about Valuev's run at Marciano's 49-0 record. Not gonna happen, he fell three wins short.
The last guy to come close was Larry Holmes, who was 48-0 before he sealed his fate when he signed to fight Michael Spinks.
In this era of a three way split in world titles (WBO doesn't count), it would seem to be an easier proposition for a heavyweight to overtake Marciano's mark.
Apparently not.
Will that mark ever be matched or bettered? Probably not. But in this whacko sport, anything's possible.

Very good question sir! Rocky did indeed set the standard with his undefeated record as he simply refused to lose. He was seemingly at a disadvantage with his short reach and relying on his tenacity, tremendous determination, stamina, and punching power and durabiity. Larry Holmes made a tremendous run at his record before losing to Spinks and I really believed back then, that Larry would do it although we will never know if he would have known when to quit before losing his first fight. Valuev is fighting in an era with so many different world titles being recognized and champions not even attempting to fight each other and unify these titles the way it really should be so it seems that it would be easier for a guy to remain undefeated. Eventually Rocky's great record may be broken if some guy comes in wins 50 fights and is smart enough to retire before losing being the key factor here. Joe Louis's 25 straight title defenses over his nearly 12 year reign as heavyweight champion will be even more dificult to beat in my opinion because a fighter has to truly be great from his younger and prime years as a fighter on into his late 30's when most fighters are fading badly. Yes both records will be very difficult to beat in my opinion sir. Thanks for the very interesting question.

Rock's no longer the perfect heavyweight ever, Ali is, and truth be suggested I record Rock in my proper ten, yet I were given Joe Louis and Jack Johnson rated above Marciano as well. there is not any doubt that Rocky Marciano is between the proper ten perfect heavyweights of all time, the talk rages in basic terms precisely how severe to fee Rocky, yet everybody who's conscious of at least some thing about boxing places Rock contained in the blend someplace. The argument is how properly Rock ought to have performed adversarial to on the instantaneous's tremendous heavyweights, and that my buddy is and argument which will in no way end, in truth Rock had a walk round weight of about one hundred eighty and a sixty 8" attain and extremely some the heavyweights in heritage have had 80 plus inch attain's and some weighed upwards of 250 so the questions will consistently forged doubt on how Rock ought to have fared adversarial to the likes of Liston, Foreman, Bowe and Lewis, yet maximum experience Rock ought to have held his personal adversarial to easily about all of us.

Brad I don't think the mark will be broken. I'm glad Valuev finally fought a decent opponent and exposed what was assumed.

Smitty I totally agree. Spinks move up messed up two careers his and Holmes. Michael was a great great light heavyweight and I wish he would have stayed there.

A lot of longevity records in sports may not be broken because the athletes make so much money now and can not keep their desire for years. It may happen but I think it is getting harder. Louis' record should never be broken, unless you get someone in that fights bums or set ups.

Yes it will be broken, but never as good as it orginally was achieved, Rocky wasnt even a heavyweight but avoided no-one and beat heavier men

I DON'T LIKE THE WORD IF - BUT IF HOLMES HAD NOT BEEN ROBBED, HE WOULD HAVE BROKEN ROCCO'S RECORD.
