I must have missed this lesson in class i think they both mean to know, but when to use each.

saber - when you know about something or how to do something

This is a great question, and a tricky one. There are even entries for this topic in Spanish forums! Both "saber" and "conocer" translate to "know" and there are some cases in which you can use "saber" or "conocer" to explain the same concept, but the phrasing would be somewhat different.

Conocer is for people and places you actually know or have actually been. Saber refers to trivia and knowledge.

they both do mean to know, but I'm pretty sure that conocer is to be aquainted wih or familiar with( so like with a person or a place) and saber is to know facts (like history)

Conocer is for familiarity - Yo conozco a el. I am familiar with him
Saber is for knowledge - Yo se la palabra. I know the word.

Conocer= To know. To get to know.
e.g. Yo conozco la ciudad de Tucson
tu conoces a mi hermana
Saber=to know how to. (to have skills)
Yo se bailar
tu sabes que no me gusta que me mientan
el sabe que tendra que trabajar para triundar., etc.etc.

"Saber" is to know a fact.

"Conocer" is to know a person.

"Conocer" is used when you want to say you know someone. "Saber" is used when you want to say you know something.

Ex.
Yo conozco a Juan.

El se donde esta la escuela
