I think if you are straight up with whoever it is you contact it would be best. Just say as the years have gone by you realize that family is important. They may be a little cool, and they may welcome you back into the fold readily, what ever they do don't forget you made the choice to disconnect and they may need to see you go the extra mile here. I know you said you pulled away due to gossip...and that can be hurtful, but you will have to be careful explaining that in full (if asked) or you will put them on the defensive.
You are making a good move here, family is important, even with its imperfections! Good Luck!

The EASY Answer is to pick up the phone and CALL Them ... especially if they have not moved in the last 10 years (they should still have the same address and phone number).
Contact other family members and get the information from them.
BE polite and just ask how they are doing. IF there were hard feelings between you and the other party (and you did something really bad -- like treat them like dirt, abuse them or something else) -- they may never want to talk to you again.

It depends on the reason for the estrangement. If you came from an abusive home, no matter how much you think you may have recovered, it isn't a good idea to start ties. Not finding out what's going on, may actually be a blessing in disguise.
Unless you're willing to risk rejection (or any form of) I wouldn't do it.

You find out their address and send a card , give it about 2 weeks then if nothing, send a letter with some pictures and wait 2 weeks you should hear something back if not then forget it.

Pick up the phone and call, google them, try red cross, hire a private investigator. Not really sure what your asking here, need to clarify.

Search the internet if you do not know where they are now. They might have an e-mail address where you can send your message. Ask from relatives or friends you know who might be able to know where they have moved.
