Man can control some things he sees. He can minimize other things. It's what he can't see that will limit designs.

You are the creator of your own destiny. Some people can only read what lies ahead in your life because of an existing phenomenon written in the sky or what they call your book of life. It is not an strict adherence to that fate which the creator is expecting you to do or accomplish. If you give yourself to what is written like following the current of the river, maybe, what was said will really happen.
However, since God gave you the Free Will and the intelligence to create your own destiny, whatever fate you have when you were born is because you were just affected by the environment around you at that given time.
Now that you are grown up, there are several possible route presented to you for your choice...there is the road that those who have strong influence on you will say this is good for you, there is the road where you think you will enjoy because you have someone to be with in the travel, there is a road that may excite you to go alone, there is a road that you don't care where it will leads you and just allow luck to bring you wherever it may be.
What ever road you take on to your journey will lead you to a certain destiny. It can be what you like best or what you have not even dream of being there. Along the way you may encounter failures or disappointments. It is either you pick yourself up and go on again or make a detour and sometimes it may even make you stop going because you thought you are faced to an endwall.
Your destiny will always depend on your will to do it and your will to accomplish it. God has nothing to do with that except to give you His blessings when you are doing the righteous thing but will definitely turn His back on you should you choose to take the wicked ways. You may happen see some wicked men having the most fun in their lives but those things that have not been blessed by God will not really last and the end could even be dreadful.
Good luck and God Bless.

Ig: A very good question to ponder over ! Firstly; one has to consider the historical fact, that every weapon science has invented, has been ultimately deployed upon the enemy. With this in mind, the focus is on this nuclear age we live in. Would mankind even, control the "now" to enable "destiny" to be a valid segment of our future? With Iran and North Korea securing nukes and the "suit-case" nukes attributed to terrorist fame looming on the scene, calls into question the plausibility of man's intelligence to even, rise to the occasion.
The world's "playing" field is somewhat, unlevel, to say the least, in regard to intelligently designing ones future. As long as indifference, personal agendas, politics, rich vs. poor, trade wars - to name a few exist, so will nuclear arms. The future looks anything but adaptive to the foremost, intelligent thinker. As people are a existing reality, so do the inherent problems of human nature that comes with them. No - man will eventually victimize them selves; as each world power throughout history has risen to demise - therefore, the cycle will continue.

Yes and no. What we dwell upon in our heart and in our minds is what is manfest in our lives - that much is true. Helping people to understand that focusing on the problem keeps it in place seems to be the hard thing. I think man does seek to intelligently design his own future but many of them do it less than consciously as they miss this detail.
Peace!
