From what I've been able to find out the nitron finish is just as durable as other finishes its just applied where normally the stainless steel is.

Generally speaking the newer the technology the better the durability. Some folks don't realize this but the line of H&K rifles were factory spray painted and I refinished one a few years ago by wire wheeling the old paint off and I used the Rustoleum high temperature black paint. Same stuff you might see advertised as for a barbeque grill. There are newer spray on finishes that are probably better than good old spray paint but hey, what ever's easiest and cheapest is sometimes the best and most practical. The finish on a utilitarian military weapon is there to protect the metal, period. The second function is to obscure it from sight so that it isn't shiny and easy to spot from a distance. Nothing like being able to touch up the old pea shooter with a can of flat black spray paint.
