I have a 11 3/4 year old stepson who may come to stay with us, is he allowed to be left home alone at this age, and does anyone know what the LEGAL age is that a child can be left alone? In the state of NJ!!

With what is happening in society today I would, no OF COURSE NOT!. Do you think at 11-3/4 he has the intelligence and sensibility to take care of himself. Suppose he lets someone in the house that murders him?

Never leave a child alone. Especially the way things are today in America.

Take the child to work with you if necessary,or, ask a family member to take care of him.

Obviously the person above me doesn't have children that age or doesn't need to leave them home alone . I live in NJ and left my oldest son home alone all summer from 11 years old on . My youngest is 11 also , but he is less mature so I dont leave him alone ( although he can stay with his brother). Its emotional age and level of responsibility they have , that should be your major consideration . Legally , you are fine though

When you are in doubt call your local police and ask their advice.

It really depends on the maturity of the child. Some 9 year olds are mature enough to stay home while there are 11 year olds who can not be trusted.

the age in tennessee is 11, not sure in NJ. it would be better to leave him if he had a friend over that you trusted, in case he got scared or lonely.
