Tell him you appreciate that but you do not reciprocate his feelings.
Words only have as much meaning as what's behind them...the 'I will love and care for you to the fullest for as long as I live' sounds kewl, but there is probably a 99% chance it won't happen...people tend to say stuff like that because they are caught up in the moment, but rarely does it hold true. Don't take it too seriously...he'll move on before too long, after you make your feelings clear.

Sounds like you both need time to heal from all of that. Be friends at least and be nice to each other and maybe down the road you will be happy you did.
Sometimes when a relationship ends, so does the friendship and that's wrong. I think you should always be freinds unless he is so hard to deal with that he bury's his own statue.

Just tell him that you are flattered and it means a lot to you that he feels so strongly. Explain that you don't quite feel the same way. It's the best you can do. Sometimes we fall in love with people and they leave a mark on our hearts that stay forever. You just happened to be one of those people for him and there isn't anything you can do to fix it if you don't feel the same way in return. Just tell him gently.

say at one point in my life i felt the same way but there's a time where ii need change and so i no longer have feelings for you like i used to, im so sorry and i'll never forget you, and just the fact that you love and care for me so much makes me feel important but ii can't be with you anymore and ii hope you can accept that and move on

Say, "That's sweet, if you really love me you want me to be happy even if it means we aren't together." If he says something along the lines that the only way for YOU to be happy is to be with him, that is a clear sign he doesn't really love you he is being selfish and just wants what he wants (i.e. you) with no regard to how you feel. If he is OK with you being with someone else because that makes you happy, then he really does love you and keep him as a friend.

tell him you just want to be friends, him loving you can mean he will be there for you when you need some comfort or talk to, it may hurt him that he cant have you but maybe he will just start liking you as a friend and move on but you two are still friends. sound kinda like grade school thing but thats the best i got good luck

He can tell you all the flowery words he can think of but if you have no feelings for him then it will be fair for him to know the real score. Don' let him hope for something he can't have. Just tell him frankly about what you feel so he can move on and so will you.

Theres really no way you can say it to him nicely, because he will have feelings for you anyways.
You just have to say "I am sorry. I _do_ like you, but I don't feel for you the same way. There is nothing I can do about it. You just have to accept that. You can't make me love you."
He just have to accept that... Love is something two people share. But of course...love hurts if it is not returned...especially for the one in love.

Just cut to the chase. Sometimes you just have to be mean to get your point across. I've been in this situation before and just tell him he's suffocating you, that made mine leave me alone, at least for a little while.
