We are fighting to liberate the people of Iraq. The plan was to first invade Iraq and get rid of then President Saddam Hussien. The US government had been after him since he invaded Kuwait in 1990 and the US defeated him in the first Persian Gulf War.
There was talk over the years that Hussien wanted to start invading other countries in the Middle East, they had filmed Iraqi soldiers working to create weapons of mass destruction in the 90s, and he had allgedly been in league with the people who attacked the USA in September 2001.
However, there were no chemical weapons of mass destruction upon invasion, Hussien was caught and later executed, and there is no proof that he was involved with Al Queda (people behind 9/11) in the US attack.
Unfortunately, Hussien's demise has began a civil war between two groups in the country, Sunni and Sheite and now the US troops can not secure the country and make it safe enough to leave. To leave would mean that the civil war gets worse and people who are against the US use Iraq as a training ground.
So in short, the reason we went to war was to take out Hussien. But we had bad information and we didn't have a plan after he was gone. Now we can't justify why we are there since none of the original reasons were true. Except that now we are there to maintain peace, but even with US troops there, there is no peace in Iraq.
Also we are trying to conduct a second war on Terror in Afghanistan and many critics say that should have been the main focus from the start. Osama has not been caught and it's six years later.
So the short answer is we went there to take out Hussien due to his involvement in terror.

Each morning the president (whether Democrat or Republican) gets a report about areas that are dangerous. I may be naive, but I trust that neither a democrat nor a republican wants any of our young soldiers to sacrifice their lives for nothing. The reason we went in was because Iraq was given ultimatums with no one to enforce them. WMD were a secondary reason. We found no WMD's even though we had intelligence they were there. I do not liken this to Vietnam because in Vietnam, we had the draft and all young men who were not in college (primarily poorer men) were sent to the country. This war is being fought by volunteers that truly believe our country is being targeted by terrorists. It is undisputed that the people who did 911 were radical Islamic believers who hate our country. Iran is now fueling the war in Iraq along with extremists in Saudi Arabia most likely. I do not understand why they hate us but they do. It is hard to understand for me as well. Some of the people who have answered said it is about oil. It is not that simple but since we need oil to heat our homes during sub-zero temperatures, he may be right that it is a compelling reason.
I know it is NOT about invading their country to stay there. It is not about ego. It is not about hating people of other cultures. It is not about one person. There are a lot of people who want to see democracy and diversity in the male-dominated Mideast. I suppport the men and women who are over there. I guarantee they would rather be here enjoying Spring and being with people they love. Instead, they are overworked, underpaid, and lonely for home.

We started out trying to eliminate terrorist weapons but found none so we said we were freeing the iraqi people by putting a democracy in their govt. That didnt work now we just have to stay there to keep the different factions from slaugtering each other. So it is a mess we got into.
We really arent fighting for anything except to keep the violence down.

Nothing...nothing whatsoever. Unless our goal is to get more and more isolated from international community relations. This war is a joke. And yes, I love the troops, served 12 years and in Iraq two tours. Our youths lives are not worth it...it has zero to do with our security...at this rate we are leaving our children a nation that is so far in debt and looked upon very porely in the international community.

In the words of the notorious Katt Williams "The government is a bunch of pimps!" They say were trying to catch Bin Laden and terrorists in Iraq but there probably in there for other reasons. P.S. - Did you ever notice new gas stations put up around NYC called "BP" on a green sign, it really stands for Bush Petroleum. LOL.

Originally, we were fighting because of the WMD lie, and then the Iraq-al Qaida lie. Now, we are fighting to save our reputation because if we leave the country more screwed up than when we found it, it will be harder to convince the world that we had Iraq's best interest in mind.

Nobody really does.
The best sort of explanation I've seen to date is that we are occupying Iraq until the new (current) Iraqi government is strong enough to handle things on their own.
The problem with that approach is that it normally takes decades for a country to become stable after a major change in regime, especially where the government model being imposed is very different than what they had before.
Which means, if our goal is to stay in Iraq until there is no more civil war or sectarian violence, then we need to expect to be there for decades.

In Afghanistan we are trying to stabilize them and keep the Taliban and Al Qaida out.
In Iraq we were suppose to stop Sadaams weapons of mass destruction. After that idiot fell the stupid Iraqis now fight amongst themselves and don't give a crap about their country. It is time now to get out.

The sad thing is the leadership of this country doesn't know either. Iraq has been allowed to become a mess because Bush & Co. refuse to listen to anyone outside of their little "circle of friends" on principle. Well, that ingenius approach is now paying dividends.

Actually, it's because the US government wants a military presence in the middle east that will allow us to prevent another oil embargo like the one we had back in 1973.
