platelets need clotting factors to be present to actually start a clot... one of these factors is thrombin.... thrombin is a good example because it is produced in an inactive form called prothrombin and must be activated before it can cause the platelets to clot.

coumadin or even aspirin...it can prevent your
blood from clotting. Also, alcohol can thin your
blood. You already know about the clotting
factors in the liver.
